How the price per gram is calculated

International gold markets commonly quote gold in US dollars per troy ounce. One troy ounce is approximately 31.1035 grams. To estimate the Singapore reference price per gram:

    1. Start with the international gold price per troy ounce.
    2. Convert the price into Singapore dollars.
    3. Divide by 31.1035.
    4. Adjust for the purity of the gold.

The basic calculation for an item is:
Pure-gold reference price per gram × fineness × weight

For 916 gold: Pure-gold reference price per gram × 0.916. That gives an estimate of the gold contained in the item. It does not tell you what a jewellery shop will charge or what a dealer will offer to buy it from you.

What the different purity numbers mean

    • 999.9 gold — approximately 99.99% gold, common in investment bullion.
    • 999 gold — approximately 99.9% gold, often described as 24K, although 999 and 999.9 are not exactly the same fineness.
    • 916 gold — approximately 91.6% gold, commonly called 22K. Read more about 916 gold prices in Singapore.
    • 750 gold — 75% gold, or 18K.
    • 585 gold — 58.5% gold, commonly associated with 14K.

How much gold is in my jewellery?

If you know the weight and purity, you can estimate the underlying gold value. A 20g piece of 916 gold would be calculated like this:
    20 × 0.916 × current pure-gold reference price per gram

This estimate reflects the underlying gold content. Actual dealer offers can differ based on product type, testing, condition, resale demand and dealer margin.

This is a reference estimate. Stones, non-gold components, dealer deductions, assay results, condition, premiums and fees can affect the eventual transaction price. See the full gold-value calculation guide.

Why does a gold bar cost more than the gold inside it?

A bar is a manufactured product, not loose gold. Its price can include refining, fabrication, minting, packaging, certification, distribution and the dealer's margin. Size matters too — small bars often cost more per gram because fixed production and distribution costs are spread over less gold. See the current 999 gold reference price.

Why jewellery costs more per gram

Jewellery pricing can include workmanship, design, stones or other materials, retail margin and tax, as well as the gold itself. That is why two pieces with the same weight and purity can have very different price tags.

    What happens when you sell

The reference calculation gives you a useful benchmark, but buyers do not normally pay a simple mathematical gold-content value. They may allow for purity testing, non-gold weight, refining, market movement and their buying margin. Use the per-gram figure as your starting point, then compare actual offers.

    Before comparing two gold prices

    Check four things:

    • purity
    • weight
    • whether the product is jewellery or bullion
    • whether you are looking at a buying or selling price

Those differences explain much of the variation between gold quotes.
