How To Calculate Gold Worth in Singapore

Knowing how to calculate the value of your gold helps you get a fair price when buying or selling in Singapore.

    The Formula

To calculate the scrap value of your gold, you need three numbers:

    1. The Live Spot Price (per gram of 24K gold)
    2. The Weight of your item in grams
    3. The Purity (Karat) of your gold

    Formula:
(Live Spot Price per gram) × (Weight in grams) × (Purity Percentage) = True Value

    Purity Percentages (Karats)

    • 24K (999): 99.9% (Multiplier: 0.999)
    • 22K (916): 91.6% (Multiplier: 0.916)
    • 18K (750): 75.0% (Multiplier: 0.750)
    • 14K (585): 58.5% (Multiplier: 0.585)

    Example Calculation

Let's say you have a 10g 916 gold chain and the live 24K spot price is $100 SGD/g:

    1. Purity of 916 gold = 91.6%
    2. 10g × 0.916 = 9.16 grams of pure gold
    3. 9.16g × $100 = $916 SGD

    Important Notes on Selling

When you sell gold to a dealer or pawnshop, they will typically offer you slightly less than this calculated "spot" value. This difference is their margin or "spread". Expect to receive about 10-20% below the spot value for jewellery, and 2-5% below spot for investment-grade bullion bars.
